Jeananne Laing will be offering her Cannabis as Medicine course in Edmonton! another date has been added due to high demand. Register with YEG Community Herbalist to save your spot!

Registration link: bit.ly/2HnVj23Did you know?? The newly opened legal Cannabis Dispensaries cannot advise you on the use of any of their products for medicinal purposes.

That's right--even though Cannabis has now been legalized for recreational use (it's been legal for medical use for some time now)-you still have to go through the appropriate channels (i.e. the doctor) to get your prescription and appropriate product from a licensed producer for any health issue.

So why register for Cannabis As Medicine then? Why is it relevant?

Lots of doctors don't work with or know much about medicinal cannabis. Just like herbalists, they haven't learnt this medicine as part of their training due to it's may years of prohibition.

I was chatting with a local dispensary manager today, and she was telling me how so many doctors are sending their patients to the dispensaries for information or to purchase medicinal cannabis. And the dispensaries can't help them--having just gotten legal approval to sell--it is for adult recreational use ONLY, and not for medicinal purposes. So the dispensaries send them back to their doctors. They can't risk losing their newly gotten licenses!

And yet, this doesn't meant that a product you purchase at a dispensary can't help with a health issue, and this makes more sense once you understand the science behind it all. (Although to be clear, I still 100% advocate for & recommend working with a doctor or health professional to go through the right & legal channels, especially to ensure that there are no health reasons why you shouldn't use it—and to be legal about how you are going about it!).

Say what?? Confusing right?? This means that there are a lot of people out there with a lot of questions about whether cannabis can help with their health condition & don't know where to start to find answers. And I have nothing but compassion for those of you who have or work with people with chronic health issues. Yup, it's a journey all right.

Hence the reason behind Cannabis as Medicine Workshop. You will find it helpful to attend if:

-you want to understand the science behind cannabis as medicine for personal use for a health issue. (What does it help with? Where do I start? How does it work in my body? How do I use it/administer it/dose it-or why does the doctor recommend I do it that way?)

-you work as a health professional in an environment with people with health issues who have questions on how to access it and if it may help their condition in some way. (LPN? RN? Acupuncturist? Dr. TCM? Nutritionist? Herbalist? etc.)

-you want to add value to your knowledge base and be able to offer awesome customer service and amplify your professional skill set so you can legitimately help & empower people to take charge of their health in a holistic way. (Yes, if you work in a dispensary you can’t advise on health there. However, it’s still awesome to know the science behind what you work with and we start from the ground up).

Since taking the course in late 2017, I have so much more to bring to the table in terms of talking to people as a herbalist and in a health food store setting--about how to help people in this regard in terms of answering questions they have and where to send them to go through appropriate legal channels and to find the help they seek. (In the health food & supplement industry we know how challenging it is to not make health claims for anything we sell when people are coming in looking for help with health issues!)

It's also been invaluable on top of my herbal training to objectively assess various different products coming out on the market in terms of what their effectiveness would be for certain different conditions based on it's ingredient list and chemical profile. It's absolutely invaluable to cut right through some fancy pants marketing and potential greenwashing. This helps me feel like I can offer genuine science based assistance to people coming from an ethical place-essential when working with health concerns of any kind.

So if you have questions too, join us! Whether it's for your own interest or to further help you rock your professional skills and increase the value you bring to your clients and colleagues, everyone is welcome.

Practitioners: certificate is issued by Lodgepole Wholistic Studies upon completion of exam & may qualify for your yearly CEU's. E-mail with any other questions! Register here-Registration for Sunday Feb 3rd is now open and available: bit.ly/2HnVj23

Pic is of me visiting an old Apothecary in Lviv, Ukraine, dating back to the 1700’s: Apothecaries being some of our earliest origins of pharmacy and medicine. Also pictured is an old Apothecary bottle of Cannabis Indica from the Pharmacy Museum in Budapest, Hungary, circa 1600's. Medicinal Cannabis ain't new, folks! <3
